I want to add to your essay, that expression gifs are even more concise and expressive like a good poem than regular speech, but I do want to chew on that Orwellian idea. It's not a dumbing down, yet I am intrigued that the exact same sarcastic or eye-rolling gif can be used by pundits on opposite ends of a spectrum against each other. Same emotion, different content, as you say.

The death threats are terrible, yet somehow I have not read a lot of "shame." I shall ponder that, but I think another important analysis is the masochism of feeling so much, too much, utterly fixated yet overwhelmed.

We actors talk about the shift from a verbal to a visual society. In Shakespeare's time, people used to say, "let's go hear a play." Now we say, "let's go see a movie." I think we feel more of a connection to the visual GIF than we do to a beautifully crafted description of the emotion.

i think you may be on to something. it's hard to identify exactly, because being absolute about it might also be a form of it. but there is a real narrowing. if culture is a bell-shape, then the center is being pushed up to a point and the curve is being straightened into a pair of flattening arcs approaching vertical.

I suspect Rand would have despised Romney and Ryan as much as Obama and his cronies, were she alive today. She despised the smell of protectionism and favoritism of anyone, regardless of creed, color or politics. Rand operated on principles so it always made it very easy to see where she would stand. Principles are also useful when attempting to understand something as fundamental as capitalism or a free market. The latter being the action and the former being the consequence.
